A slightly damp Sunday morning we headed to Surrey for a personalised guided tour of the famous Denbies Wine Estate winemakers facility in Dorking, Surrey.
First up was a fascinating movie explaining the background and history of the Denbies Wine Estate, played out in their huge auditorium.
Then it was time to see where and how the various wine types are made. A delicate process that our guide explained that the journey from grape to glass begins immediately after the grapes are harvested. Inside the winery they are typically crushed, releasing the juice while separating the stems.
For red wines, the grape skins are left intact with the juice during fermentation, which is the process where yeast converts the natural sugars in the grapes into alcohol. This is what gives red wine its colour, tannins, and much of its flavour.
For white wines, the grapes are pressed before fermentation, so the skins are not involved. After fermentation, the wine may undergo additional processes like aging in oak barrels or stainless steel tanks to further develop its flavours and complexity. Finally, the wine is bottled and ready for enjoyment.
Along the way, we were treated to a number of ‘tasting’ opportunities. Perfect for the passengers of course, but the option of tasting and then spitting was at hand for the drivers.
All round a fascinating insight into world of UK wine making. Delicious variations means there are plenty of different wine choices available at Denbies Wine Estate.
